Post-surgical wound care: common mistakes that slow healing, and what to do instead

Medically reviewed by Dr Sanjay Parashar, MBBS, MS, MCh (Plastic Surgery), DipNB · Plastic surgeon, Dubai London Hospital, Jumeirah · Published 3 November 2026 · Last reviewed 3 November 2026

Quick answer: The most common mistake after surgery is keeping a wound sealed under a waterproof dressing for more than 24 hours. Trapped moisture softens the skin and invites dermatitis and fungal infection. Absorbent pads held under the pressure garment, without tape, keep the wound drier. In sweat-prone areas such as the armpit, groin and under the breast, reducing sweat helps the wound heal.

Most surgical wounds heal well. When they don't, the cause is often something small in everyday care. In Dubai's heat, moisture is the biggest enemy of a healing wound. Here are the mistakes I see most often, and what I advise my own patients to do instead.

Key facts

What trapped moisture causesSoggy skin edges, dermatitis, fungal infection
Better option for most woundsAbsorbent pads directly under the pressure garment, no adhesive tape
High-risk areas for sweatArmpit, groin, under the breast

Mistake 1: leaving a waterproof dressing on for too long

Waterproof dressings are useful for a shower. Left on for more than 24 hours, they trap sweat and wound fluid against the skin. In Dubai's heat this happens quickly. The skin around the wound turns white and soft, a moisture rash (dermatitis) develops, and fungal infection can follow. Softened wound edges are also more likely to separate.

What to do instead: use a waterproof cover only for showering, then remove it, pat the area dry and apply a fresh dry dressing.

Mistake 2: assuming a sealed wound is a protected wound

For most closed surgical wounds, I prefer simple absorbent pads placed directly under the pressure garment, without adhesive tape over them. The pads soak up moisture and keep the wound dry, the garment holds them in place, and there is no tape to trap moisture or irritate the skin. Change them when they become damp or soiled.

Mistake 3: ignoring sweat in skin folds

Some wounds sit where sweat collects and skin rubs on skin:

Constant moisture in these folds slows healing and raises the risk of rash, infection and wound opening.

How is sweat reduced in these areas?

In these areas, I inject botulinum toxin into the skin immediately after surgery. It temporarily reduces the activity of the sweat glands (eccrine and apocrine glands), so the area stays drier while it heals. The effect lasts about 3–4 months, which covers the healing period.

Mistake 4: applying creams or home remedies

Ointments, oils, powders and herbal remedies can keep a wound wet, irritate the skin or hide early signs of infection. Use only what your surgeon advises.

When should I get my wound checked?

Post-surgical wound care: frequently asked questions

How long can I leave a waterproof dressing on after surgery?

Generally no more than 24 hours. Use it for showering, then replace it with a dry, absorbent dressing so moisture does not build up under it.

Is it better to keep a surgical wound dry or moist?

Most closed surgical wounds do best kept clean and dry. Open wounds are different and may need special dressings or VAC therapy chosen by your surgeon.

Why is the skin around my wound red and itchy?

Often it is moisture dermatitis or a fungal infection from sweat or a dressing left on too long. It needs checking, as it can look like a wound infection.

Can Botox help a wound heal?

In sweat-prone areas such as the armpit, groin and under the breast, botulinum toxin given straight after surgery reduces sweating for about 3–4 months, so the wound stays drier. It does not heal the wound itself, but it removes one of the things slowing healing.

How do I care for a wound in Dubai's heat?

Keep it dry, avoid long periods under waterproof dressings, wear loose breathable clothing and avoid heavy sweating until it has healed. Our summer heat guide has more detail.
